The Strike’s Over!
That’s right 8 weeks, and many many missed classes later, the support staff is going back to work. Although I really should be happy that I’m finally getting services that I paid for, I’m somewhat apathetic. I mean, up till now I’ve missed a bunch of labs for physics, calculus and comp. sci., but it doesn’t feel like it really mattered. All of the marks that would’ve been assigned to those labs that we missed were somehow reassigned to other areas, so the only thing we really missed was applications. Oh well, like that really matters to me. In fact, now that the strike’s over, it mean’s I’m back to what my schedule is supposed to be… that’s… my goodness, 26 hours a week. Well, this next month is going to be fun. Some good news though, I wrote my second algebra midterm today, and I think I did pretty well on it. But then again, that’s only what I think. I’m confident I’ll be ok though. Just two more midterms to write now. Comp. sci on Friday (which is probably going to be a joke) and physics on Monday. Everything should be alright, I’m not too worried about either of those. I also get my business midterm back on Monday. I’m not sure what to think of yet though, ‘cause some of my friends have got them back, and they didn’t do nearly as well as they had thought. Oh well, nothing I can do about it now. Hopefully it’ll turn out ok. They’re going to bell our final marks anyway, so even if I do poorly on this one, I should be able to pull it up later. Economics on the other hand… don’t even know when I’m going to get that back. Don’t want to think about it.
There’s also been some other stuff going on around here. Two weekends ago we had our don evaluations. The problem with that though, was that the evaluations go straight to our don’s boss, get filtered, and then our don gets to see them. Our don is a pretty good guy, so he wanted to talk to us on a more personal basis about what we all thought of him and the job he was doing. So last weekend we got together just to talk about policies, problems, and whatever else was in the air. One of the major things we were talking about though was that there seems to be a lack of community spirit and actually, community to a certain extent. In terms of spirit, it just seems like whenever there are events planned for our floor or building, not many people join in. So the people who decided to go to the meeting tried to come up with ways to promote participation. Tomorrow and Friday are “Laurier Days”, where perspective students get to come to the campus and tour around. So we have this jungle theme around our building and we’re trying to get everyone to decorate a bit, and at least get involved. So far it’s going pretty well, there are some people who sometimes don’t participate getting into it. Hopefully the participation will just keep going up from here.
The other major problem at the meeting was community. And it’s not that there isn’t any, but our floor is sort of split. On the one side (the side I’m on), everyone knows each other pretty well, we hand out together, all that good stuff, and on the other side it’s the same thing. The problem is that the two sides barely talk with each other besides at floor meetings and stuff. There’s a physical barrier between the two sides, so it’s understandable that it would happen, but a lot of us would like to see that all change. It’s tough, but we’re going to see what we can do.
