Signs

Went and saw Signs tonight. I must agree with Richard on this one, a very well made movie. I’m not as freaked out as Richard may have seemed, but still, the impact of the movie is still considerable. *SPOILER ALERT* The movie deals with the crop circles, and alien invasion. But the real plot or theme was faith and fate. The main character is a father and husband who left priesthood and Christianity because his wife was tragically killed when stuck by a car (I found that a little odd that a priest would have a wife…). A believable happenstance as many people seem to question their faith after a tragedy. Later as they find out more and more about this alien invasion, his brother asks if he could go back to his old ways for once so that he could feel a little comforted. His reply was that there are two kinds of people in this world; 1) those who after a stroke of “good luck” believe that it was a miracle, and that there is someone watching over us; and 2) those who believe that it was just luck, and that we’re on our own. We must decide which one we are, if we believe that we’re alone, or that there are miracles, and that there are no coincidences. To make a long story short, the movie ends with the man turning back to priesthood because many of the little things that happened in his life that seemed to make no sense came together and significant and had its purpose.

It made me think about my own faith, and all the little things in my own life. How they might affect me later in life, and how every little thing that happens isn’t coincidental. Just something to think about, meditate on maybe…

And something else that the movie made me think about. The whole existence of aliens. I saw a little bit of the movie Contact the other day too, so it compounded this a little. But do aliens exist? To quote the movie, “The universe is a big place, and for us to be the only ones in it, seems to be a pretty big waste of space.” I’m not quite sure what to think of the matter. I’m in no way doubting my faith because of this little thought, but then again, God never said another about creating other forms of life on other worlds. All that stuff about aliens contacting us is a whole other thing, but is there anything in the bible that rules out other forms of life existing in this universe besides us?

Anyway, great movie. Going to have some interesting thoughts and dreams tonight me thinks….
