Images of Salvation

Went down to the ROM today with Josiah to see the “Images of Salvation” exhibit. It features works from Vatican City of a biblical theme. The artwork there was simply incredible. And this is coming from someone who knows little to nothing about art, and appreciating it besides the aesthetic parts. The way the painters were able to blend so many different colours together to get the desired skin tones, and the way they contrasted the light and dark areas of the paintings really brought them to life. It was also really impressive to see that they could paint such large pieces and keep everything in scale/proportion (again, I know squat about art, so stuff like that impresses me =Þ). And yes, I did sorta skip Malachi, but I knew this would be a one in a lifetime chance to see some of the artwork there, so I couldn't pass it up.

The theme of the night was the work of God through all children of men. And in this particular exhibit, you could see exactly what Jon and company were talking about. Many of the paintings there weren’t even created by believers, and yet you can see that God must have touched them in some way.

Besides the paintings though, there were a whole slew of different bibles that have been kept over many years. Before the invention of the printing press and all that good stuff, the recording and reprinting of the bible was done by hand. And trust me, the people who did this back then have MAD skills. Just looking at some of the old bibles they had there makes you think about how the bible even got circulated. I mean, the detail and attention to spacing, etc. was so intricate that it must have taken a very long time to copy just one. These bibles also had these amazing decorative borders that featured some pretty incredible artwork too.

All in all it was a great time. Must thank Jon & Co. for organizing this and makin’ it happen. It was sweet.
