It's time for another rant
I'm taking this IMC (that's Integrated Marketing Communications) class term. Yeah, that's right, a marketing course. We've had quite a bit of discussion on brands, their power, how customers regard them, some of the more powerful ones, etc. So it got me thinking about some of the brands out there right now, some of the ones I wear myself, some of the most popular ones in fashion, and I've come to a few conclusions/opinions, as always.
Some of the brands out there right now really disgust me. Brands like FCUK and TNA (Aritzia)... they're nothing more than pretentious capitalists just trying to make a quick buck through a gimmick-y name. "French Connection UK"? "Talula National Athletics"? Give me a frigging break. If you really want to name your company "FUCK" and "Tits 'n Ass", just come out and say it. But I guess you can't blame them right? The average consumer these days is more concerned about getting the popular brand of clothing and accepting their explanations than being concerned about what the brands mean. Seriously, people need to stop buying this stuff.
This all reminds me of something else I've noticed. There are some companies out there that are just marketing genius. Take for example, lululemon athletica. Here you have a company that makes "yoga products". ROFL. YOGA products. Now, this in itself isn't such a big deal. They saw a niche, made some products. Good for them. Here comes the genius though. Let's make some mostly-cotton pants, tops, whatever, tell people it's for yoga, and then charge an exorbitant amount for them. Man, that is something else. I suppose you could say the same thing about something like Nike or Reebok, but at least their clothing is somewhat functional. It'd be interesting to ask how many people use this 'yoga wear' for yoga. Of course, I won't be doing that. I'm too lazy. If anyone feels like asking around, let me know what you find... lolll.
I guess I should say, if you're reading this and you wear any of those brands, don't take it personally. It's not like I'm hating on you. I'm sure I do plenty of stuff that you don't like too. Maybe you have something to think about now though.
On a brighter note, I've really been digging the new ads from Coca-Cola. Good message, well made, and well, it's Coke. How can you not love it? Some of their newest ads are below. Enjoy. (HAR).
(Btw, that last song was written and performed by Jack White, if you care to know.)
