Chivalry is dead?
(This might be the stupidest post in the history of this blog, but...)

Pastor Tim was telling this story this morning during his sermon at KWCAC today. He told us about a time when a girl from UW was studying at KWCAC, and he had offered to carry her bag of books for her, only to have her adamantly refuse. Coincidentally, I was talking to a friend last night about independance and his/her admitted fear of it, having been highly dependant on his/her parents up till now. So then here we have two pretty much polar opposites - a highly independant girl who insists on doing things for herself, and a highly dependant girl who is scared to take the leap into self-sufficiency.

So what's my point? Well, I've been finding that a lot of guys these days just don't buy into the whole chivalry thing, or at least don't practice it. You know, simple things like opening doors, walking people home, giving up a seat for another, etc. Yes, a lot of people may call these things old-fashioned and whatever, and no, they're all not really necessary, but seriously, it wouldn't hurt to be a little courteous. And ladies, it wouldn't hurt to be accepting of said courtesy. It doesn't make you any less independant.

Of course, this should all be taken with a grain of salt. If it comes to the point where you come to expect such acts of courtesy and kindness, well then, there's something very very wrong. Thus, coming full circle to those whom are overly dependant. Seriously, suck it up and start doing things for yourself. Yes, we all know it isn't easy, but that's life.

Yeah, okay, I don't know why I just wrote all that.

hey nevin, I was just procrastinating and browsing through people's blogs like the sick stalker that I am.. anyway, I just wanted to point something out about the first example you gave, of the girl refusing to let the pastor carry her books. So, so, SO many times, we girls are told never to let strange men carry things for us because it can be used as a ploy leading to assault (I know it sounds paranoid, but young women are taught to be extremely paranoid about that stuff, trust me). So if she didn't know who he was, the incident might not be the catastrophic death of chivalry the pastor might have been making it out to be.

That said, it's always nice to have someone open a door (very common) or give up a seat (not so common)!

anyway, it's good to see that you're doing well.
